I'm quite surprised no-one has mentioned this, but most of you will know by now that megaupload.com was the first big website to suffer the wrath of SOPA. I'm gonna be a preachy cunt now...

This could be the start of a pretty quick death for the internet as we know it. A police state should never rule something that doesn't exist as a solid entity. The internet is a forum for freedom of speech, and this is the beginning of the gagging order. It's been coming for a while, with the Piratebay guys miraculously escaping jail a couple of years ago, but now it's quite apparent that there's a huge crackdown on internet "piracy".

Useless fact: Hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz is/was the CEO of Hong Kong-based company megaupload.com - that probably means nothing to anybody here. :/

From what I have heard, SOPA is just the yanks trying to control everything again, seems to be working this time. Someone needs to reign them in, maybe the Chinese who own 1/5 of the american economy and the only army in the world that is in fact increasing while most countries downsizes (so there may be some work for you after all RtS)

Seriously, though, I kinda want it to happen (the death of the internet, I mean). I know it won't happen, and would have distrastrous consequences if it did, but it'd be...interesting.

I often want stuff to happen to make the world interesting, like an alien invasion or nuclear war.

Anyway, I didn't think SOPA had been passed yet so the Megaupload thing must have been an existing law. It's stupid how this law will enable the US to take down foreign websites and prosecute citizens of other countries, like they want to extradite that British guy for something which isn't illegal here.

They've actually postponed the SOPA bill and won't consider it again until they've made changes.

Rob is right, SOPA was put on the back burner before mega upload was taken down just proving that the American government had the power to take down a website if they want to. Sort of makes the protests seem a bit redundant.
